Summary of Project:
University of
Portsmouth
Burnaby Building Greenhouse Heating & Ventilation Control
Portsmouth
PO1 3QL
Global Building Controls designed, manufactured and
installed two control panels for this project. The chosen building
management system was Trend.
One of the panels was used to independently control the temperature
and humidity of each of the four greenhouses by opening & closing
the skylight windows as specified by the consultant. These windows
were also designed to shut when it rained, which was detected by the
rain sensor. When the rain sensor dried out, the windows were
allowed to re-open if required.
The second panel was supplied to control the greenhouse heating
boiler and zone heating coils. The boiler was configured to operate
automatically on demand from each greenhouse. The temperature &
humidity set points for each greenhouse can be adjusted by the staff
using a user friendly keypad and are adjusted depending on the type
of plants being cultivated.

Since the conception of this project, GBC has become much
more familiar with the greenhouse controls industry due to our links
with
Argo Priva who are the world market leaders in process
automation for indoor horticulture, as Energy saving in horticulture
has always been an issue.
Growers have been
seeking ways to reduce energy consumption since the oil crisis in
the early seventies. The energy market fluctuations in more recent
years has created the need to optimise the control of energy in
horticulture all the more important.
As a
Priva partner, GBC can provide you with the solutions for
effective energy management in horticulture or HVCA applications.
